Sherman Jen, Founder & Chairman of MLES, Acting Head of MLIA-Shenzhen
Dr. Sherman Jen, Chairman and Founder of Maple Leaf Educational Systems and Maple Leaf International Schools. obtained the BA degree from Beijing Foreign Languages University (China), MBA from University of Wales (UK), and an honorary doctoral degree of Laws from Royal Roads University (Canada). The heart of his educational philosophy is “blending the best of Chinese and Western education.” He devised a system at Maple Leaf International Schools that uses bilingual teaching (Chinese and English), and students receive dual high school diploma (Chinese and Canadian) that are widely recognized by global universities and colleges.
In 2004, Dr. Jen was selected as one of the most influential figures in the private education industry in China. In 2005, he received the Outstanding Chinese Entrepreneur Award from the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of the PRC. In 2011, he was honored as one of the “Top Ten Figures of our Time” by a group of media organizations and industry associations. In 2013, he received the Governor General’s Medallion from the Governor General of Canada. In October 2014, he received the Chinese Government Friendship Award.
Glenn Borthistle，Principal, High School, MLIA-Shenzhen
Mr. Borthistle has a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Western Washington University. His undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Arts in Education also from WWU. Glenn’s teaching career started in the Surrey School District in British Columbia in 1989. In 1994 he accepted a position as Vice Principal in SD No. 83, North Okanagan-Shuswap (BC) and in 1999 became a Principal in SD No. 83. He was named the Director of Human Resources in 2008 in SD No. 83, and became the Superintendent of SD No. 83 in 2013. Glenn Borthistle joined Maple Leaf in 2017, serving as the vice-principal of MLIS-Tianjin TEDA.
Kathy Zhang, Principal, Elementary School & Middle School, MLIA-Shenzhen
Ms. Zhang graduated from Tianjin Radio and Television University with English major. She joined Maple Leaf in 2008, and served as Director of elementary & middle school English Teaching Center, Maple Leaf International School-Tianjin TEDA, Director of English Program, Maple Leaf Education Park-Tianjin, Principal of Maple Leaf International School-Tianjin Huayuan, Vice President of Maple Leaf Education Park-Tianjin. Kathy Zhang is the elementary and middle school principal of Maple Leaf International Academy-Shenzhen.
David Jiang Vice Principal Elementary School & Middle School，MLIA-Shenzhen
Mr. Jiang graduated from Western Sydney University with a Master’s Degree in Interpreting and translation. With approximately 20-year teaching and teaching management experience, he was committed to explore ESL teaching rules and methodology. He was awarded “Outstanding Teacher” in various national and municipal English Competitions. His essay on English teaching was recognized as “Excellent Prize” issued by NAFLE. He joined Maple Leaf in 2011 and served as Dalian Maple Leaf High School English teacher，ESL Director of Maple Leaf Pingdingshan, Maple Leaf Pinghu and Maple Leaf Shanghai.
Angela Zhang, Marketing Director, MLIA-Shenzhen
Ms. Zhang received a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies from the University of British Columbia, and a Master of Arts in Education Management from Royal Roads University. She joined Maple Leaf in 2010, served as Foreign Affairs Manager, Executive Assistant to BC Superintendent, Director of Administration Office, Marketing Director of Maple Leaf Educational Systems. She received many honors such as “Maple Leaf Excellence Medal Winner”, “Maple Leaf Honorary Alumni” and etc.
Hongyu Lian, Vice Principal of High School Chinese Program
Ms. Lian achieved master degree of Chinese International Education in Liaoning Normal University and joined Maple Leaf in 2012. Ms. Lian successively worked as Chinese language teacher in Dalian Maple Leaf High School and the person in charge of Chinese courses of Canada Maple Leaf Kamloops High School.
Ms. Lian applied the Maple Leaf education philosophy --- combining Chinese and Western education to cultivate international elites and talents.
Hong Hao, Dean of Elementary & Middle Schools, MLIA-Shenzhen
Hong Hao, elementary school senior teacher, bachelor’s degree. Highest Honor Medal winner, famous mathematics teacher and part-time mathematics teaching research staff of Maple Leaf Education Systems. She joins Dalian Maple Leaf International School since June, 2001 and currently worked as Teaching Affairs Director of Maple Leaf International Academy - Shenzhen. Engaging with teaching for 28 years, Ms. Hao has a wealth of educational and teaching experience, and she is also good at being a good mentor for students who is able to provide good advice and guidance to students. Ms. Hao is enthusiastic and dedicated to her work and she won the titles of "Excellent Homeroom Teacher of Dalian," "Dalian Backbone Teacher" "Excellent Teacher of Jinpu New District" and other glorious titles. The math class taught by Ms. Hao has won a lot of provincial and municipal first-class awards and the essays about education and teaching written by her have been published several times on national and provincial-level journals. Also, she deliver her demonstration classes and share her experience many times to other Maple Leaf schools. Education Motto: Excellent results are generated from the genuine enthusiasm which is deep in one’s heart. She will use her enthusiasm to devote herself to Maple Leaf Education and she believes that the students of Maple Leaf will be the biggest beneficiaries from Maple Leaf’s Chinese and western integration education.
